THE GROWING SWEATER

a children's picture story book

by Jason J. Marchi

FROM THE FRONT JACKET FLAP

Granny Quigley has knitted a very unique sweater. To her surprise, every time she washes and dries the purple sweater with the white lace collar it grows . . . one size larger!

What can she possibly do with a sweater that keeps on growing? And will it ever stop growing?

Ashley and Morgan, Granny’s granddaughters, take charge of the situation in attempt to solve Granny’s dilemma.

The three travel the countryside looking for a home for the growing sweater.

As the sweater grows unexpectedly for each new owner, Ashley and Morgan are as determined as ever to find a proper home for such an unusual article of clothing.

The surprise solution ends up a delight to readers, making this award-winning fantasy tale an instant classic.

An Interesting Historical Note

The Growing Sweater won co-first place in the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators New England Chapter contest in 1993, as judged by Pat Cummings. In 2006 the story was a finalist in the 2006 Tassy Walden Awards: New Voices in Children's Literature contest. A final judge stated: "This writer [Jason Marchi] has talent!" It then appeared as the lead story in the Braille Institute's 2007 EXPECTATIONS anthology of children's literature, edited by 30-year veteran editor, Douglas Menville, who stated that this is one of the very best children's stories he's read in all his years of publishing. After a long history of rejections from all the major New York publishing houses (with one editor saying the book was not multi-cultural enough), The Growing Sweater will finally become a stand-alone picture book in 2012, as it well deserves.
